Viacatarina shopping center’s facade renovation

2014

The proposal concept consists mainly on two goals. The modernization of public outdoor space and the continuous relationship inside/outside that this type of building requires.

With reference to the Portugal Pavilion at the 11th Venice Biennale of Eduardo Souto Moura and Ângelo de Sousa, the objectives are achieved through the implementation of mirrored glass on the facade’s white plaster areas.

The reflection of the traditional Porto facade clearly conveys the desire to modernize the public outer space, through the combination of a contemporary material in a historical context and a consolidated environment. It reinforces the indoor/outdoor idea inherent in this type of building, bringing somehow the feeling of being inside, despite being out here.

And in order to better adapt this material to the old facade, the mirrored glass layout will be oriented by the joints that already live in stone.
